  • Milk – The Forgotten Ultimate Recovery Drink?

    Wednesday Feb 15th BBC1 Britain’s Favourite Supermarket Foods www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01c89y8

Did you see it? Among the ‘Am I Addicted to Chocolate’ and the ‘Best Way To Brew Tea’ bombshells was a rather interesting piece comparing the effectiveness of milk and energy drinks for muscle recovery. Based on a study done by Northumbria University

the results appear to be a ringing endorsement for the benefits of milk over those sexy commercial brands. No mention was made in the programme of which brands – and I can’t find any in the study notes either – but the headlines were this:

Milk works faster – by 50%

    It’s far cheaper

    Cow is better than soy

It doesn’t matter if it’s full fat, semi, skimmed or chocolate – all are as good

And the main reason why? It’s protein wrapped in loads of other goodies.

When I was triathlon training in my late teens/early twenties I did used to down a pint of milk after an early morning swim session – before heading out on a death-or glory group bike ride. Now I know we’re all bombproof anyway at that age, but it did make me wonder…

Suffice to say our household milk bill has now increased as I conduct my own field test over the next few weeks. Watch this space.
